How Have E-Cigarettes Changed the Smoking Landscape?

e-cigarettesIn a relatively short time, electronic cigarettes have done a feat that many consider to be revolutionary. They were introduced at a pivotal moment, when globally, smokers as well as the general public, began looking for alternatives to unhealthy habits. E-cigarettes came at a time when people were hungry for options, and becoming fearful of the future if they continued to maintain their destructive ways. Here are the factors that have set the tone for the e-cigarette industry to prosper.

Changing Mindset

Less youth start smoking every year, and trends have shown more teens making an effort to stop smoking. Along these same lines, more adults are also looking to quit the habit, instead of stubbornly assuming they have no choice but to remain tobacco smokers their whole lives. More and more people, regardless of age are concerned with their health and making intelligent decisions to benefit their long term health, and electronic cigarettes have enabled many to change their ways from tobacco to electronic smoking.

More in Line with the Digital Age

The digital age has made digitizing every aspect of life in sync; why store files on discs, CD’s, or hard copies anymore when you’ve got the cloud and the option of remote storage? Streamlining everything has become the norm, and electronic cigarettes fit this lifestyle way better than old school cigarettes. In fact, cigarettes seem rather synonymous with the old Marlboro icons of cowboys on horses in the Wild West, pre-industrial revolution. Why smoke when you can have so much more with vaping? There’s a reason those images are more fitting of a bygone era.

Options, Endless Options

Today’s customer is hard to please and wants options. The digital age and the advent of internet shopping has enabled everyone to get exactly what they want, when they want it; without compromise. E-cigarettes are part of this equation, offering the features smokers want, in whatever format they want, at better prices.

Every so often, something comes along and changes the way things have always been done. No, it cannot be predicted, but that lightbulb moment of change and progression is what propels all major movements. It’s amazing to see what the electronic cigarette has done for smokers.

US Appoints New Surgeon General Vivek Murthy

Vivek Murthy E-CigarettesThis past December, the US appointed Dr. Vivek Murthy as the 19th Surgeon General. As his advice to the Secretary of Health and Human Services on the subject of public health and scientific issues impacts all Americans, here is a look at his background and what his advisement may mean for the electronic cigarette industry and those who are involved in it.

Dr. Vivek Murthy was born in England in 1977 to Indian immigrants, relocated to Miami, Fl when he was three. He graduated as valedictorian from Miami Palmetto Senior High in 1994, and then attended Harvard University where he graduated magna cum laude, with a bachelor’s in Biomedical Sciences. In 2003, he received an MD from Yale School of Medicine and an MBA in Healthcare Management.

Upon graduation, Dr. Murthy worked both as an internal medicine physician, as well as led and managed various medical care teams at Brigham and Women’s Hospital for more than a decade. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated excellence in leadership, having started a variety of nonprofit management organizations, including Doctors for America, which includes 15,000 physicians and medical students advocating for health care reform.

In 2011, Dr. Murthy was appointed by President Obama to serve the nation as an advisor on public health within the US Department of Health and Human Services, in the sector of the US Presidential Advisory Council on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.

In 2013, he was nominated by President Obama for the position of Surgeon General, with approval and backing from two former surgeons general, and over 100 medical and public health groups in the US, including the likes of the American College of Physicians, the American Public Health Association, the American Heart Association, the American Cancer  Society, and the American Diabetes Association. On December 15, 2014 his appointment was officially approved, in a 51-43 vote, and is the youngest surgeon general in history.

While Dr. Murthy has been criticized for his progressive views, including opposition from the National Rifle Association (NRA) because of his stance on gun control, he has stated that this will not be a focus of his position as Surgeon General.

As far as the e-cigarette industry is concerned, it is refreshing to have a voice of reason within the public health community who has been willing to take an unbiased stand. He has stated that electronic cigarettes hold the potential for many positives, especially in regards to public health, and that lawmakers are “in desperate need of clarity” on e-cigarettes to further guide public health policies. He is also known for his open perspective in regards to medical marijuana.

As the issue of electronic cigarettes continues to weigh on the public, and the need for reasonable regulating grows, it is great to see our new surgeon general understanding this. What this means for the e-cigarette industry is hopefully a continued unbiased outlook towards the great potential that lies in electronic cigarettes.

California’s Current Take on E-Cigs

State of California Anti-VapingElectronic cigarettes are making the news quite often these days. As the whole industry gains more and more notice, both for the positive attributes and negative speculation, the attention really shines a light on how popular these products have become. With millions of people using them, billions of dollars being raked in, and the tobacco industry keeping a close eye on the progress, it is a given that news is going to circulate due to the hype. Along these same lines, there is a great amount of misinformation abound, and it is rather unfortunate that such speculation, and not hard facts, can lead to a major health agency urging the community not to use products as a result.

So, with this in mind, the big news of the industry at the moment is the state of California. In specific, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has announced that residents of California should not use electronic cigarette products, citing that their many “toxins,” “chemicals,” and nicotine make them a health hazard. Dr. Ron Chapman, the head of the CDPH and who is responsible for this campaign, makes these statements on the behalf of the public, yet at the same time, makes declarations based on speculation (claiming that nicotine from e-cigarettes is as addictive as the nicotine from traditional cigarettes, for instance).

The problem with this is that it unfairly targets e-cigarettes as dangerous, when there is no definitive evidence to prove this. Yes, we understand the necessity for moderate and reasonable regulations, however to make a declaration that all residents avoid usage of these products that contain no tobacco, produce no smoke, tar or combustion, and very few ingredients is boldly biased.

Electronic cigarette devices are not undoing the progress the anti-smoking coalition has achieved in the past several decades, and it is a shame that the concept of tobacco-free devices continue to draw comparisons. E-cigarettes do not serve as a gateway, and nor are they really able to be compared to traditional cigarettes on the basis of what they consist of.

It is a given that anytime something becomes very popular and the trend transitions into a solidified movement that there will be negative press, however the state of California should embrace a more open view, and understand exactly how electronic cigarettes are being used.

History of the E-Cigarette

Letter LandscapeIt’s interesting that the e-cigarette is constantly being reinvented, and while it is a very innovative product, it still has a history that can be traced. To learn about the origins of the e-cig, and how we got to the point we are at today keep reading!

The first incarnation of the electronic cigarette was developed in 1963. Herbert A. Gilbert developed the prototype and even had a patent for this product. Understanding the many hazards of tobacco smoking and understanding that with the millions of people who were smokers, it was only a matter of time before all of the health implications became a major, widespread problem. However, at the time, smoking was so en vogue and the harmful effects of cigarettes were not yet widely known, the market was not yet ready for the electronic cigarette. So the concept was filed away, only to be reintroduced some forty years later by a Chinese pharmacist whose father died of lung cancer due to smoking tobacco cigarettes. Han Lik is considered the modern-day inventor of the electronic cigarette.

Seeing a way to bring a positive outcome from these unfortunate circumstances, Han Lik developed a method in which smokers were able to have the same experience as using a traditional cigarette, including holding a similar device, puffing on it, inhaling, exhaling, and essentially receiving nicotine from it, only without the thousands of chemicals and negatives of tobacco.

Han Lik received complete support from the company he was employed with, and with their funding, his vision and design became a reality. It was only a matter of time before the products hit the Chinese market. Once they did, it became immediately clear what a success vapor cigarettes would soon become all over the world. The products’ popularity spread quickly, and before long, people all over Europe were smoking with e-cigarettes, which was a very groundbreaking occurrence as Europeans are quite famous for enjoying the habit of smoking.

By 2007, electronic cigarettes hit the American market, and were met with instant success as well. Now, more than 7 years into their tenure in the US, they are more popular than ever, and so many different varieties have been developed to please smokers of all sorts. To the extent that e-cigarettes have completely offset the tobacco market, and more and more smokers switch to alternative cigarettes all the time. From their past, to the present, this ingenious invention continues to benefit the lives of nicotine connoisseurs everywhere.

Electronic Cigarettes and the Millennials

millennials-360Millions of people are smoking electronically, and it seems that it has become extremely unfashionable to smoke actual cigarettes. Across all age groups of smokers, users are much more interested in using modern, advanced products, such as those from South Beach Smoke and VaporFi without the actual tobacco. Why taint yourself with smoke if you’ve got options otherwise?

Millennials are vaping these days and it’s pretty obvious that this trend is right in line with their contemporary lifestyles. Born between 1977 and 1994, this generation wants what they want, and they want it now! They like technology, they like instant gratification, they like convenience, and they like having the ability to avoid “old school” problems like smoke, tobacco, and restrictions placed on doing what they enjoy. Why smoke and deal with all of those troubles when you can have exactly what you want without them?

The millennials have been known to smoke more than any other generation prior, and now they’ve taken the habit electronic. In recent studies of smokers, millennials make up 40% of the demographic. In data reports of those using e-cigarettes, 44% of e-smokers are of the millennial age group; notice something here? This is a generation who really enjoys smoking, and they are looking for alternatives to the traditional means because they want to still be able to enjoy it all.

Traditional smoking cessation products just don’t resonate with this generation, who still want to savor the feelings and sensations of smoking, minus the smoke, and e-cigarettes are the perfect medium, offering just that. Nicotine patches, gums, and prescription drugs only do so much, and they do not provide the “smoking” aspect of smoking.

Vaping enables users to fill this void, getting nicotine in the process, and being able to have a very similar, very pleasurable experience all the while. Using advanced electronic smoking devices gives smokers the option to control the different aspects of smoking, control how much nicotine they use, choose among thousands of different flavors, and even control the intensity of the vapor hits they get. For a generation all about having their way with things, e-smoking takes smoking to another level, and makes so much more sense than using old fashioned, analog cigarettes.

E-Cigarettes and the Economy

e-cigaretteThe sales of electronic cigarettes are on the move, ever-increasing as the industry explodes in popularity and demand. While traditional cigarettes have always been a source of controversy, as they are known to have devastating, often deadly long-term effects, their sales and profitability, as well as how high they are taxed, have enabled them to stay in business regardless.

So, as the sales of tobacco cigarettes decline, both due to users switching to e-cigarettes and from people being less inclined to smoke cigarettes in general because of the awareness of their dangers, electronic cigarettes are prospering, profits are skyrocketing.

So are electronic cigarettes good for the economy? With their rapid growth, yes they are in several ways.

This year, electronic cigarettes and accompanying products are slated to become a $2 billion industry. Every year since the products hit the market less than a decade ago in the US, the industry has seen explosive growth, and that alone would be an obvious indication that e-cigarettes are positively contributing to the growth of the economy. Predictions, however, place even greater growth on this market, and within the next 3 years it is expected to be raking in over $10 billion annually.

E-cigarettes have also contributed to economic growth by aiding in recovery with so many added jobs in an innovative industry. Many e-cigarette retail businesses are small, and because it is a growing niche market, the individual owners are doing very well and being able to add jobs in their respective communities is a great benefit to the bigger picture. As this industry is ever-evolving and driven by advancing technology, there will be many more opportunities for growth in a great variety of different areas as it grows.

To employers and business owners, workers who do not use tobacco are statistically more productive and miss less work due to tobacco-related illnesses, and this equates to more money made as a result of having more able workers; also an indirect but positive contribution to economic rebuilding.

Overall, electronic cigarettes are having a very good effect on the economy. Smokers are switching all the time, and business are growing. Jobs are being added to the economy regularly and products are selling. It’s a great time to be involved with tobacco alternatives!

Cost: a Huge Reason E-Cigs are so Successful

cs2One of the best reasons to consider the many financial incentives to carrying electronic cigarettes and vaporizers in your retail stock is that they offer one very promising benefit to customers: saving money. While many retailers have seen drastically lower sales in tobacco cigarettes and products in recent years, especially since electronic cigarettes have taken such precedence, e-cigs have enabled business owners to capitalize on the growing movement, as well as offer products that are in demand, and add revenue in areas where they were seeing declines.

Traditional cigarettes are extremely expensive, and most smokers spend over $2000 yearly on the habit. Saving money is one of the most obvious reasons smokers look to alternative cigarettes, and most are extremely pleased with how much they save over time.

While they are very cost effective for users, they also happen to be very lucrative for retailers. They present a variety of different products that fulfill the needs of smokers, offering an extensive range of different items that appeal to a wide range of different smokers, from e-cigarette disposables, to standard e-cigarette starter kits, advanced vaporizers, e-liquids, refill cartridges, and additional accessories that users want and need. Whether users are vaping with disposable units, standard e-cigs that require cartridges, or are using e-liquids with their advanced vaporizers, they will consistently come back to where they purchased their products for more. And even still electronic cigarettes are less pricey than traditional.

Electronic cigarettes offer a great sales opportunity for retailers, and they fill a need that is ever growing. International Vapor Group brands offer great wholesale opportunities to retailers, and the very best quality e-cigarette products to customers; all at enticing prices. These products are seeing such success because everyone on both sides of the sale are benefitting. If your retail selection is lagging behind in this area, feel free to contact us about wholesale opportunities! We are the forefront of this industry, and offer a variety of exciting ventures.

New E-Cigarette Study: Gateway to Freedom, not Smoking

julia_louis_dreyfus_e_cig_a_lIn a recent study done by the Harvard School of Public Health, assessing 26,500 smokers across Europe found that according to their usage, electronic cigarettes are not a gateway to tobacco by any means. As expected, and as most users would explain, the researchers found that those who use electronic alternatives to cigarettes turn to the products to get away from tobacco usage, and not the other way around.

This study was the largest ever of its kind published in the EU, and it revealed that merely 1% of nonsmokers had tried an e-cigarette type product, also representing that the products do not appeal to nonsmokers, and that they have very little allure to those who are not interested in smoking in general. 20% of smokers in the study had tried an electronic cigarette product at least once, while 4% of former smokers had tried them. An overall estimate from the Harvard study puts the number of people in the European Union who have at least tried e-cigarettes at 29 million.

While the researched showed that the majority of e-cigarette smokers were young, in the 15-24 age bracket, it also revealed that they were all previously heavy smokers who were looking for an alternative to tobacco usage.

One of the leading professional voices in the international medical community who supports electronic cigarette usage, Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos, a cardiologist at the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Centre in Athens, Greece commented on the findings of the study as further proof that electronic cigarettes are not attempting to renormalize smoking. He stated that the products are not drawing in nonsmokers, as the findings of this study prove that nonsmokers have little interest in adopting usage. Current smokers see them as an alternative to tobacco, and that is the general consensus of how they are perceived.

As e-cigarettes grow in popularity, they have become a hot button subject in terms of public health. In a report done by Public Health England in May, and recently when an international committee of scientists urged the World Health Organization to consider their stance on e-cigarettes very cautiously as they present a very valid opportunity in terms of public health issues in helping smokers veer away from tobacco use, more and more research and advocacy is coming to light in favor of e-cigarettes and the options they provide to assist smokers. As this study, and surely more in the future will show, electronic cigarettes are having a very positive impact on smokers throughout the world.

WHO Encouraged by Scientists to Consider Electronic Cigarettes as Alternatives to Tobacco

the-e-cigaretteThe debate over electronic cigarettes continues to wage on, and this time the news is coming from top scientists who are urging the World Health Organization (WHO) to considering their classification of the electronic alternatives differently. In other words, they want WHO to avoid classifying electronic cigarettes as tobacco products, because in reality they are not tobacco products, contain no tobacco, and merely recreate the experience of smoking without smoke.

The scientists who are urging this decision are doing so on the premise that they believe in the many positive aspects of the products, as well as the major potential they hold for assisting smokers in avoiding a vast array of deadly diseases associated with smoking and tobacco usage.

Currently, WHO, which is a UN agency, is in the process of assessing its position on electronic cigarettes. In the past, they have made indications that they wanted to classify all nicotine-related products into the tobacco category, regardless of tobacco content. Last November, documents from WHO were leaked, which stated that they reportedly viewed electronic cigarettes as a threat.

However, the decision on how e-cigarette products are labeled will not be made without worldwide outcry, as a group of top scientists from North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia have written an open letter to WHO general director, Margaret Chan on the subject. Their stance on e-cigarettes is that they are a “low-risk” product, and can play an influential role in the fight against tobacco and smoking, and should not be categorized as part of the problem. “These products could be among the most significant health innovations of the 21st century – perhaps saving hundreds of millions of lives. The urge to control and suppress them as tobacco products should be resisted,” they scientists wrote.

As the debate wages on, we are very pleased to see top experts in the field of science taking a stand for electronic cigarettes, and willing to put their names to the fight in keeping them available. E-cigarettes are designed as alternatives to traditional tobacco products, and they should be considered as such, both on local levels as well as international.
