New Study Shows E-Cigarettes Can Curb Tobacco Cravings

E-Cigarettes are the Sensible AlternativeA new study published in Time has found that electronic cigarette use can help reduce tobacco cravings. Considering how electronic cigarettes work, it comes as no surprise to vapers that studies are now confirming what they’ve already experienced.

Researchers at KU Leuven studied 48 smokers who had no intentions to quit smoking for the duration of eight months. The smokers were divided into three groups with two vaping and smoking cigarettes for the two first months, while the third group was only allowed to smoke traditional tobacco cigarettes. The study’s main focus was to see if electronic cigarettes were able to decrease the smokers’ urge to smoke tobacco or if it removed the urge to smoke entirely.

The second stage of the study was published in the International Journal of Environmental Research on Public Health and during this phase, the third group used e-cigarettes.

The common result seen across all groups was that the number of tobacco cigarettes decreased by 60%. Other findings that emerged from the study showed that long-term smokers are most likely to trade their traditional cigarettes for the electronic counterpart, with 21% of the group having stopped smoking tobacco completely, with an additional 23% of smokers reducing the number of tobacco cigarettes they consumed per day by 50%.

It is quite well-known that electronic cigarettes usually contain nicotine (depending on the user’s preferences of nicotine level, or lack thereof) however, they do not contain tobacco or the many chemical toxins found in   traditional cigarettes. The study reported that e-cigarettes typically contain anywhere from 100 to 1000 times less toxic substances than traditional cigarettes, making them an obvious option for those looking to avoid such exposure.

“With guidance on practical use, the nicotine e-cig offers many smokers a successful alternative for smoking less – or even quitting altogether,” said Professor Frank Baeyens, who led the study. “E-cig users get the experience of smoking a cigarette and inhale nicotine vapor, but do not suffer the damaging effects of a tobacco cigarette.”

This is just one of many studies currently being done on the effectiveness and benefits of electronic cigarettes. The alternative of the smoke-free lifestyle, even with nicotine, is proving extremely beneficial to many smokers. Many e-smokers are certain this is the future of smoking, and studies such as this, prove we are on the right path.
