Piinpoint recently conducted an exclusive interview with our CEO, Nick Molina, to pick his brain on the vaping industry and to discuss VaporFi’s growth strategy during our market’s most challenging time. With a background in operating brick-and-mortar stores, Nick explains how he selects which markets to penetrate, how the industry has changed since he first entered, how regulations will affect operations, and gives inspiring words of encouragement for future business owners. His optimism comes from decades of experience in launching successful entrepreneurial ventures, so it is not said in vain. With that in mind, he gives some sound advice to aspiring entrepreneurs and franchisers.
According to the latest research, indoor vaping is unlikely to be a health threat to those within the vicinity. The ongoing debate regarding vaping indoors has recently been tested by a study that examines indoor air quality before and after usage, conducted by three educational research institutions from Europe, ETH Zurich the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology.
Kaunas University of Technology in Lithuania, and the EMPA Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology.
The findings have been remarkable, and they offer an exceptional range of data that has never before been available on the subject. The study was recently presented at a conference focused on research dedicated to indoor air quality in Barcelona Spain, and it is groundbreaking because this type of data was nonexistent prior.
The research specifically tested air quality risk to bystanders and non-vapors when exposed to vapor that has just been exhaled. The most groundbreaking aspect of the study found that the particulates of the e-liquid vapor dissipated in mere seconds after exhalation, which results in an extraordinarily low level of risk to those who are exposed to the vapor once it has been exhaled. Additionally this research throws a major monkey wrench into the argument of comparing e-cigarette vapor and tobacco smoke, likening the two as the same byproduct. For vapers, this is a major win because it adds evidence to the equation, where there was nothing more than educated speculation before.
Different scenarios were tested, involving rooms with and without ventilation systems, to see if the effect of the vapor’s dissipation was varying between them, however the researchers discovered the same results from both environments.
Tobacco smoke, is obviously the results of burnt plant matter, tobacco. It is laced with thousands of chemicals, and leaves behind a toxic tar. These particulates are extremely dangerous, and they accumulate over time once exhaled, lingering in the air. In contrast to vapor, in which the aerosol particles exist only for a few seconds afterwards, renders any such comparison between vapor and smoke, especially in regards to the secondhand affect, are completely void.
So, another positive study on the effects of vaping in the books. We are elated that such research is coming to light, and further adding to the credibility of this exciting, emerging industry!
VaporFi really outdid themselves with a hilarious April Fools’ prank this year! Like many companies, the brand hit social media and major news outlets on April 1, 2016 boasting about a revolutionary new invention that would turn vapor invisible, making public usage virtually transparent! Hey, IKEA was advertising a reclining chair that miraculously changes colors by mood, and Google got into all kinds of sticky trouble by mixing business and pleasure with Minions and emails; we certainly weren’t the only ones creating a little raucous foolery!
VaporFi went totally all Harry Potter-esque with the technology of vaping invisibility. Feasible, intriguing, and useful, right? The promise of the VaporFi VOX Invisi 500 TC, with accompanying Invisi E-Liquid and Vapor Glasses, which were “designed” to create a device that produced an invisible vapor that enabled vapers to literally use it anywhere, with no trace of vapor whatsoever. However, what would have been an excellent tool to evade the harsh confines of tight regulations, was unfortunately, too good to be true!
While many vapers actually bought into the cheeky joke, and some were actually sad that it won’t be an actual product hitting the ever-so-innovative vape market, VaporFi had a ton of fun creating this prank campaign. It reached a variety of mainstream internet news outlets, and was featured in Business Wire. To quote our CEO, Nick Molina, “This groundbreaking technology is a game changer that Government regulators can’t touch. The VOX® Invisi 500 TC will allow anyone, anywhere, anytime to vape in public places. We’re the only company in the world with this technology and the first to bring invisible vaping to the market.” Ah, if only all April Fools’ jokes were this much fun!
The Federal Department of Transportation, also known as FDOT, announced this week that electronic cigarettes are officially classified as smoking devices in regards to air travel, and therefore, they are now prohibited for use during flights.
From a statement from the Transportation Secretary, Anthony Foxx on the matter: “This final rule is important because it protects airline passengers from unwanted exposure to aerosol fumes that occur when electronic cigarettes are used onboard airplanes. The Department took a practical approach to eliminate any confusion between tobacco cigarettes and e-cigarettes by applying the same restrictions to both.”
Yes, it is true that electronic cigarettes have never been allowed, however, to further clarify the matter, FDOT has made it official with this final issuing of regulations that all electronic cigarettes, advanced vaporizers, electronic cigars, electronic pipes, any devices that are designed to resemble everyday objects including pens, and simply any device that is remotely similar and has the ability to vaporize nicotine liquid into delicious clouds of vapor is federally banned on commercial flights from, into, and throughout the US. The rule goes fully into effect April 3, 2016.
Additionally, while electronic cigarettes will be allowed to be carried with you on flights, FDOT has also made it a requirement of anyone carrying an electronic cigarette device that such items may not be stored in checked luggage; carry on only. Furthermore, electronic nicotine delivery systems may not be charged in any such manny on board the aircraft, in flight or otherwise.
If you vape, or are even just aware of the electronic smoking movement, and have attempted to, or looked into the possibility of vaping on an airplane, you will already know that it’s been prohibited. All the while however, federal mandates regarding the official rules have not been made clear, as the majority of the rules previously in existence were not inclusive of vapor devices, considering their relative newness. Until now.

It has become a billion dollar industry, with immense innovation, prospects, and developments that are happening at a seemingly almost daily rate. One of the vaping community’s greatest voices, Congressman Duncan Hunter has been a very vocal, very proud proponent of vaping. While legislation looms from all angles of American government, this fine gentleman has been very outspoken on his personal views of promoting the acceptance of vapor, as well as sharing his personal accomplishments that have occurred due to having switched to vaporizers.
In a rather bold move this week, in an attempt to make himself seen and have his voice heard, the California Republican Representative decided to use his vape as a tool of expression, and during a meeting designated to determine the fate of vaping on airplanes, he made it clear how passionate he is about the usefulness of these awesome alternatives to tobacco. He opened his argument with a lusciously bold cloud of vapor, explaining what a vaporizer is and does, and certainly got a lot of attention with his dramatic gesture: “So this is called a vaporizer,” Hunter announced, while at the same time, causing some annoyance as the woman sitting next to him fanned his vapor from her air space. “There’s no combustion, there are no carcinogens … there is no burning, there is nothing noxious about this whatsoever.” While we do agree with him wholeheartedly, this method didn’t achieve the anticipated reaction from fellow lawmakers.
Rep. Hunter’s effort to sway the judgement in his favor, despite putting out all the stops to make a point for the positivity of vaping, was ultimately shot down. Unfortunately, he did not gain the support of his peers in the House, and it looks as though this amendment will be getting a Federal banning in regards to vaping on aircraft. Regardless, we do appreciate his unwavering support for the industry, common sense in regards to vaping, as well as using himself as an example.
Not enough research to deem electronic cigarettes a worthy option for smokers looking for an alternative? Wrong, according to Public Health England.
While the debate rages on, between controversy and approval for e-cigarettes, Public Health England recently made a bold announcement in the direction of positivity for electronic cigarettes. Acknowledging the fact that safety and purity regulation is a necessity, they also acknowledged the many positives these products hold, and that they have the potential to be a major source of assistance to those looking to quit smoking.
The stance cited a variety of research, publicly putting an end to the incessant cry of “not enough research or scientific data,” and zeroed in on the common sense ideal that without tobacco, the concept of smoking takes on an entirely different face. All of the information released by Public Health England was part of their Evidence-Based Review, and it examined a large collection of data and studies, as well as consumer information to reach their conclusions. This was done over an extended period of time, with a great amount of consideration on previous research, and was aimed to be conducted in a most unbiased manner.
Despite e-cigarettes not being marketed as such, the research found that electronic cigarettes are the number one choice among smokers as a cessation device. While these products are prohibited from being marketed in such a way, this is how users are utilizing them, and contrary to what major governmental agencies (in the USA, at least) may have to say about the regulatory semantics, smokers are proving to have very successful results.
As the foreword of the Public Health England’s Evidence-Based Review states: “The role and impact of electronic cigarettes has been one of the great debates in public health in recent years and we commissioned this independent review of the latest evidence to ensure that practitioners, policy makers and, most importantly of all, the public have the best evidence available.” There was no political manipulation or hidden agenda behind this research. It’s about being upfront, honest, and giving the real deal statistics to those who need them. Whether or not the US follows suit, and begins regulating on such a common-sense, realistic manner will be seen in time; it the meantime, enormous kudos to Public Health England for being blunt where it matters, and making it clear that e-cigarettes are not the bad guy!
By 2017, it is expected that the electronic cigarette industry will be raking in around $10 billion yearly. Presently lingering around $2 billion, a 5 times increase is not a trend to be balked at. What these numbers also spark discussion of is taxes, because like any product industry that gets hot, it’s going to get taxed.
The ongoing debate on how electronic cigarettes are classified in regards to being considered “tobacco” products is a direct indicator of how they may or may not be taxed in the near future. Especially relevant to the discussion of “special taxes,” it is rather apparent that e-cigarettes should not be considered tobacco products, because simply, they do not contain tobacco.
The “special taxes” in question are what are known as “excise” taxes, and they have been implemented in recent years, particularly by interests of the anti-e-cigarette movement, who see the income potential of these products, particularly because so many smokers have switched to using them instead of traditional cigarettes.
While currently the only state taxing e-cigarettes in the same methods as traditional cigarettes is Minnesota, there are several more considering taking the same action, including Indiana, Kentucky, New York, New Jersey, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Washington. In the past, Hawaii, Oklahoma, and Utah attempted the similar measures of e-cigarette taxation, however their efforts were not successful.
In Minnesota, their Department of Revenue has estimated that their taxation of e-cigarettes is slated to be bringing in somewhere in the proximity of $1.16 billion due to the combined taxation of e-cigarettes and tobacco products in the 2014 – 2015 fiscal year. Not a figure to be taken lightly, and it is certainly setting an example for other states to compare notes on.
And though the money looks great, there is the moral side of the story to consider. And the fact that vapers will not go down without a fight. And that there are many thousands of small businesses that will be majorly impacted by such taxation. So, as attractive as taxing e-cigarettes may appear, for cities and states that implement such measures, it will not be a clear-cut or easy road ahead.
Vape lounges are becoming more and more common. As the industry continues to expand, and more people begin vaping as an escape from tobacco, there has been increasing awareness towards ‘vape culture.’ In many major cities, as well as throughout suburbs and smaller metropolitan areas, vape lounges are opening frequently to offer vapers settings of cool relaxation where they can mingle and vape without feeling out of place, or worse, discriminated against. VaporFi, crossing the boundaries of all areas of the electronic cigarette industry, has succeeded immensely with this concept within all of their stores, giving users a retail location that doubles as an inviting lounge with a chill vibe.
Why are Vapers Flocking to Lounges?
More people vaping has allowed the industry to flourish on a social level; people want to be immersed in a setting that caters to all things vapor. From the comfort of being able to vape publicly with other like minded individuals, to having an atmosphere that is accepting of the enjoyment of vapor, the vape lounge gives users that sense of relaxation, pleasure, and social camaraderie. Vaping has taken on a unique subculture identity, and users want to enjoy their vapor among others who get it. The act of vaping goes so far beyond smoking; it’s a lifestyle for many that gives them full control over their nicotine usage without sacrificing the pleasure of smoking.
So What’s the Difference between a vape shop and a vape lounge?
Vape shops and vape lounges are distinctly different. Yes, the lines can be blurred, as in the case of VaporFi, which is not the typical vape retail environment, however vape lounges cater more to the concept of relaxing, socializing and indulging. On the other hand, vape shops are business-focused, with more emphasis on retail sales.

More and more people are switching to electronic cigarettes every day because more and more people are concerned with their health. While there has been no approval publicly by any major health organizations endorsing electronic cigarettes as a valid alternative to traditional tobacco, many users are confident, based on their own intelligent judgement, that vapor is simply better than smoke.
While we are in no position to make claims on either behalf, what we do know is that smoke is extremely detrimental to the body. It has a negative effect on most major organ systems, can contribute to a wide variety of deadly cancers, and can greatly reduce the quality of life for those who smoke by compromising health. Cigarette smokers are acutely at risk for a wide range of cardiovascular risks, including aneurysms, coronary heart disease, atherosclerosis, chest pain, high blood pressure, damage to the arteries, peripheral arterial disease (PAD), stroke, and heart attacks. Also of importance, smoking can impede the lungs and one’s ability to breathe, putting smokers at risk for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), chronic bronchitis, emphysema, pneumonia, tuberculosis, and asthma.
For smokers who are looking to better their lives, and avoid the risks smoke (not nicotine) put them in line for, switching to electronic cigarettes enables an incredible way to have nicotine without the smoke. Vapor smoking allows smokers to continue the lifestyle they enjoy, with an alternative that allots all of the same experience and pleasure, without touching tobacco.
Millions have made the switch, and millions more will do so as a result of the benefits of vapor. As an e-cig brand who has been at the forefront since the earliest days of this industry, we could not be more proud of all the smokers out there who make the conscious choice to better their lives by choosing to live without smoke. Vapor cigarettes offer endless amounts of choice, variety, and excitement for smokers who want an alternative. We are beyond passionate about what these products are doing for people’s’ quality of life!
