FDA Announces E-Cigarette Regulations

FDA E-Cig RegulationsThe tobacco deeming regulations were announced this week by the federal government, after years of speculation as to how they would impact the electronic cigarettes industry. As the industry has long been unregulated, it was a continuous discussion that everyone knew wasn’t about if; it was about when. Well, that when is now, and if Congress doesn’t act to overturn these rules, there is the potential for the industry to be quite negatively as a result.

The most confounding aspect of these regulations is that the FDA is categorizing an entire industry’s worth of products that contain no tobacco, as tobacco products. This is done simply to adhere to the February 2007 “grandfather date” and does not account for the thousands of products that simply did not exist at that time. For companies that manufacture vapor products, being able to keep their products on the market will require lengthy paperwork for every product sold, with application costs that can reach as high as $1 million per application. Not many companies, outside of the massive few, and those owned by cigarette companies will be able to front this. And simply, this type of regulation, which targets a growing market is blatantly wrong.

These initial regulations are still being examined, and some rules are less concrete than others, at the moment. Some of the regulations that will go into effect 90 days from now include:

  • No free samples of vapor products can be distributed
  • No sales via vending machines
  • Age verification will be required for purchase, as no sales will be permitted to those under 18, whether online or in retail locations

However, other areas of the nearly 500 page text detailing the deeming regulations are less set in stone, and subject to Congress overturning them. It certainly goes without say, the entire vapor products industry as well as all the researchers involved in examining the benefits of e-cigarettes have been up in arms. There is an overwhelming amount of support for these products, and many feel the positives they possess far outweigh the few negatives.

Currently there is a lot going on as the vape Industry prepares to fight for our rights of equality and by no means is this the end. We have long been ready for these regulations, and we are urging our customers to sign this petition to make it clear to the White House, and to Congress how beneficial vapor products are, and how destructive this type of legislation can be.

To all of our customers, we are here to support you throughout it all, and we look forward to continuing to serve you with the finest in vapor for years to come.

The Near Future of Vaping: Where We’re At, Where We’re Heading

Vape IndustryThe vapor industry is a really exciting place to be at the moment. It is a movement thriving on the brilliance of its consumers, and the limits are constantly getting pushed passed preconceived notions. Right now, we are at a major crossroads for the industry, as the technology is getting seriously into overdrive, while government regulation is looming ahead in many places across the world. As the industry has grown from a seldom seen occurrence into a serious mainstream niche market, it shows how impressive and forward-moving these products have been.

However, at the same time, with progressing and success comes the necessity of rules needing to be rewritten, and in regards to the vapor industry, the game has changed so much, rules are being rewritten everywhere. With millions across the US and Europe having ditched tobacco cigarettes for high tech mods and powerful vaporizers, it has become quite accepted that vapor offers a tremendous experience, with no regulation.

As was noticed quite prominently at Vape Jam, which just occurred in the UK last weekend, the vibe was both excitingly progressive, as well as cautious in regards to the impending discussion of regulations we know will be started this year. The industry has become so technical on its own, as a movement by vapers, for vapers, one of the most impressive trending aspects currently is how dedicated to safety, and self-regulating the industry is. While many vapers are after the showy mods that boast incredible features and the largest capacities for power, behind the scenes is extremely technical and innovation-focused. All of the major companies in this industry are interested in creating the safest, most efficient, and the cleanest devices. It’s about pushing further into the unknown, and developing products consumers can trust are safe.

And in terms of regulations, the vape industry knows they are coming, and will begin to be implemented in May 2016 in Europe, and TBA in America, for better or worse. While many do not see regulations as a completely negative scenario, as they can work to the favor of the industry by offering standards and safety, it is within the hope of all vapers that they are of the more common sense variety.

Why MODS Are the Latest Bang in the Vape Industry

VaporFIModsMods, vape mods, vaping mods, vapor mods, vaporizer mods, high-tech mods, e-cig mods; whatever you call them, they’re really big right now. They have overtaken the market of the vapor products industry, becoming even more popular than the original model e-cigs, the immensely sought-after personal vaporizers, and have converted millions of vapers into hardcore vapor-chasing, flavor-craving power-fiends.

So, why are mods so coveted, and why has the market turned so sharply towards these box-shaped performance magnets? Here is a look why, and where this trend is headed!

Power: This is the kicker. As more people vape for longer periods, the desire for greater power increases. Mods take care of this in a way that is not possible with vaporizers and e-cigs.

Versatility: Along with that intense load of power come a slew of different operating features that work with it to deliver a range of features. Temperature control, variable wattage in excess of 200W, intricate electrical controls that enable users to tweak their devices to get exactly the type of performance they’re aiming for, having the ability to choose between devices that work with one or two batteries… there are a lot of options here, and vapers are totally into it!

Modern Styling: Vape is a tech industry, above all. It is an industry built on the meeting point of technology and modernizing the experience of smoking. It fulfills a need, removes an obstacle (tobacco), and does it all with fun to use, interesting technology that translates perfectly in today’s gear-happy culture.

Fun Factor: Mods also happen to be fun. Those who use them are often really into the science behind them, and configuring their aspects with the right accompanying products, such as tanks, accessories, and e-liquids can create amazing results! Massive clouds, powerful flavors, and getting your device to do your bidding… it’s just fun!

When you stack up the many benefits of mods, and what they bring to the table, there is no comparison! While e-cigs and vaporizers are not going anywhere, they’ve definitely had to share the spotlight in the past year or so. If you’re interested in learning about the latest mods around, check out VaporFi’s amazing selection here!

Welsh Ban on E-Cig Use in Public Overturned!

shutterstock_192564356Several weeks ago, a public health bill in Wales was erected in an effort to ban the usage of electronic cigarettes and similar devices in public. Both Liberal Democrats and Conservative members of the Welsh Assembly opposed the ban, however the Labor Party was able to extract a considerable amount of support from the Plaid Cymru members to get it passed. As should be done with all shady backdoor dealings that do not benefit the public, who will ultimately feel the brunt of such bans, this bill didn’t stand a chance. While it existed momentarily, due to the hard work and tireless diligence of vapers and vapers’ advocates, the bill was shot down on account of pressure applied in regards to a lack of evidence.

As with many situations occurring globally, in which vaping has become politicized, and politicians have gotten involved for reasons beyond the greater good of the people, this Welsh vaping ban is a prime example of manipulation. This particular bill was the work of UK Health Minister Mark Drakeford, who blatantly ignored the vast amount of research presented, favoring his own prejudiced-based opinion to pass it. As Drakeford has a longstanding history of opposition to vapor devices, claiming from his own opinion that vapor methods are the “least effective” method to be used for quitting smoking. His actions angered not only vapers in the UK, with advocates for vaping becoming vehemently outraged, numerous public health agencies reacted with similar disapproval. Despite Drakeford’s inherent sense of personal self-importance, the scientific and public health communities were clearly not accepting of it. This ban was opposed by Cancer Research UK, Action on Smoking and Health (ASH), and the Royal college of Physicians Wales, among many others.

However, victory on behalf of justice prevailed. it did not even take a full 2 weeks before counter action was implemented. Those who opposed the ban fought against it by using evidence-based research. They made a clear case to the Welsh Assembly, who then understood that they were lied to, as scientific information was knowingly withheld from them.

Can Electronic Cigarettes Save the Government Money?

Vaping Can Save the Government Millions! As electronic cigarettes continue to make ground saving customers money and offering a viable alternative to all the health ills and negatives that come with tobacco, on an individual level they have been beyond groundbreaking and positive. However, on a much larger scale, in regards to public health, the question has presented itself as to whether alternative cigarettes can save governments money, and have a major affect on the population’s health as a whole. Can they?

The answer is yes. By eliminating a large amount of the health care costs that come as a result of smoking, as tobacco is the cause of many deadly diseases, and by halting a great amount of productivity loss as a result of tobacco-caused illness, e-cigarettes possess a great amount of promise. They have the potential to save the American government a massive amount of money.

In 2009, a comprehensive study was performed to assess the costs of tobacco cigarettes which the government, both state and federal, were dealing with. Costs included productivity losses, and a great increase in the cost of healthcare to cover illness and disease related to smoking. In this time period in which the study was done, the US spent $185 billion alone in productivity losses. Healthcare related costs, paid for by the government, totaled in at $116 million. These figures are not, by any means small, and considering the economy is still recovering from the Great Recession, this is a massive amount of money that can be allocated elsewhere.

Rather astounding, don’t you say?

The CDC, also known as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, estimates that Medicaid covers approximately 68 million people in the US. Of that population, 52% are smokers. And considering the aforementioned cost of government healthcare being spent on cigarette-related disease and productivity loss, the number of smokers who are covered by Medicaid is indicative of how much money is being spent paying for tobacco caused illness.

Just using these figures alone, is enough to know that by offering the public a convenient option with smokeless cigarettes, therefore illuminating tobacco usage, the government can predictably spend less money on smoking-related diseases, illnesses, and medical issues. Bottom line, e-cigarettes have the potential to save the government hundreds of millions of dollars; just some food for thought in terms of spending!

E-Cig Explodes, Parents Blame Device for Underage Son’s Injuries

E-Cigarette Explosions: Think About Your Safety FirstA teen in Alberta, Canada is recovering from second degree burns that came as a result of an electronic cigarette device exploding as he used it. Currently, media reports are painting it as a situation of a rogue device randomly turning explosive, however they are failing to take into account that the product he was using was much more complex than a basic electronic cigarette. The explosion was most likely the result of improper usage, and perhaps using the wrong variety of battery to power the device. It is possible he did not understand the complexities of working with a mech mod, however, let it be known that despite what the media reports, this situation probably could have been avoided.

There are several things wrong with this story. Here’s a breakdown:

  1. The device this child was using was a mechanical mod. Not a beginner’s device. Not an intermediate device. Rather a device for legit experts, who know exactly what they are doing when it comes to handling serious lithium batteries and building electrical panels yourself.
  2. His parents allowed him to use this thing; at such a tender, experimental age under 18, his parents should have had a better handle of what he was up to and they should have been paying more attention. Now they’re opting to blame the vapor device; real smart to avert the attention away, guys.
  3. Someone actually sold a child this product due to there being no age regulation in this area of Canada? This is stupidity on all levels.
  4. When using mech mods, you have to do a substantial amount of research to understand how they need to be built. Beyond building, people need to be aware that mech mods are inherently DIY devices and there is a definite level of risk in using them. Most companies selling them will make this very, very clear in an effort to educate e-cigarette consumers

So, the real story should be on awareness, not a vague headline designed to scare and distort the reality of e-cigarettes and other vapor products. Safety first, it should be the primary goal of everyone who opts to use a vapor device. If you are going to venture into advanced territory, and attempt to work with devices such as mech mods, please, by all means, know what you’re doing.

What’s Going on With E-Cigs in the Media?

E-Cigs in the Media and Regulations Across the pond, in the UK, a First World nation full of educated, intelligent thinking people, with a democratic government, excellent physicians with a fully-functional healthcare system, and a high level of independent research done through their scientific endeavors as well as through their many highly-esteemed universities, they have been able to see through the spin, and understand the enormous potential of electronic cigarettes in regards to the betterment of their public. With 3 million people as smokers, they see the promise an alternative such as vapor devices presents. Instead of fighting over trivial suspicions, they are focusing on facts, and focusing on how many lives can be saved by offering vapor devices as legit cessation options.

In the US, however, we find a new reason to vilify e-cigarettes every week, and often base these suspicions on the conclusions of sporadic studies, often done with biased data, or select data from perfectly positioned groups that will enable the outcomes to sway in their predetermined directions.

According to vapor products advocate, David Sweanor (adjunct professor of law at the University of Ottowa as well as a special lecturer for the division of epidemiology and public health at the University of Nottingham): “There’s a very strong abstinence-only part of what’s going on in the anti-smoking movement. I think it’s one of the most counter-productive things that we’ve ever seen.” Having spent a huge amount of his career over the past 30 years dedicated to fighting the war on tobacco, Sweanor is more than capable of offering some insight to a muddled situation that could really use some common sense.

This week, reports of a study done the journal the Lancet Respiratory Medicine, claimed that according to their data, e-cigarettes do not help smokers quit smoking. Despite having been published by a legitimate medical journal, the study was loaded with inaccuracies, and has been labeled both “grossly misleading,” by Peter Hajek, currently the Director of the Tobacco Dependence Research Unit of Queen Mary University of London, and “not scientific” by Deputy Director of the UK Centre for Tobacco & Alcohol Studies, Ann McNeill, who also serves as a professor at King’s College London.

It’s rather interesting, though heavily confounding on why electronic cigarettes are being so vilified in the media. Sure, we could go all “conspiracy theory” on you as to why this could be part of some big, deep, underlying scheme, but that’s really not necessary. There’s enough going on at the surface to ponder, and it really is perplexing every way it’s examined. We’re certain, despite the current state of affairs, that the future holds much promise, but in the meantime, it’s a crazy path the industry is navigating!

E-Cigarettes Now Regulated as Medicine in UK

Vapor Products Regulated As Medicine in UK The United Kingdom’s regulator for medicinal items, the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has officially classified electronic cigarettes as medical devices. This is the step taken in an effort to what may become the official marketing of electronic cigarette devices as cessation devices. This is very big news for the vapor products industry, and while it is not fully relevant to the US market, it is a major step for the industry as a whole, and it sets an incredible example the US needs to take note of.

Prior to this landmark decision on the part of MHRA, vapor products were not permitted to be recommended by general practitioners as they were not considered licensed products. Because of this monumental decision, vapor products will now be able to truly compete with established cessation methods in the UK, such as nicotine gums and nicotine patches, and physicians as well as other healthcare providers will be able to recommend them for usage.

This is an excellent example being demonstrated as a model for nations such as the US, whose own policies and politics regarding e-cigarettes are not yet established. Across the pond, we are currently awaiting the FDA to make a final decision on the ability of today’s e-cigarettes to even continue being sold.

The health agencies in the UK have been staunch and stubborn in regards to their opinions of e-cigarettes, and they have seen the potential they hold for quite some time now. Last year, Public Health England’s report on e-cigarette use, and their independent findings that vapor cigarettes are 95% healthier than traditional tobacco cigarettes made worldwide headlines, having come from a legitimate source making such a bold claim. The UK has been blatantly vocal about the promise these products hold for people looking to quit smoking, and with 20% of the British adult population as smokers, they are truly committed to their betterment and health.

We applaud the UK on their decision, which we know was based on a great amount of research, studies, and common sense. We are excited to see where the market is headed, and look forward to what these revolutionary products are going to do for the public health sector in the near future.

Vapor Product Trends Outlook for 2016

2016 Vaping TrendsWith a new year right upon us, we are looking forward to what’s to come. Every year, we watch the vapor products industry evolve in new directions, unveil all sorts of new innovations, and experience the technology in action.

In 2015, the availability and options in regards to the most high-tech box mods, sub ohm devices, and exceptionally high quality e-liquids became extremely mainstream. What used to be reserved for only the most eager of DIY vape enthusiasts became accessible to any and everyone who wanted to experience the power of taking the control of a box mod into their own hands. In a few short months, the industry changed entirely. Trailing on this trend, we expect 2016 to offer even greater offerings in terms of technology, and making very advanced products available to those who want them, without having to construct them on their own, if they do not want to.

As for regulations, we are awaiting them because it seems rather imminent in the US. One way or another, (and hopefully they will be created with fairness and common sense in mind), it is only a matter of time before they are here. While we do not know what to expect exactly, we do hope that all regulations instituted are fair and not oppressing to the industry and its users.

It has been predicted that the overall sales of electronic cigarette products sales for 2015 would be somewhere in the vicinity of $3.5 billion; quite a legitimate market when you weigh all angles. In fact, current models show that by 2018, the vapor products industry is expected to reach the $10 billion range. The growth is imminent, and despite the impending regulations that are clearly an obstacle the vapor products market is contending with, this industry is way greater than a single trend; it’s a thriving niche.

So, 2016 is almost here and we are most definitely looking to the future with promise and optimism. We expect growth, innovation, and continuing to evolve with this ever-changing industry. From everyone here at IVG, we wish you a super, happy New Year!

A Critical Look Behind Harvard’s Study on Diacetyl & E-Liquids

E-Cigarettes and DiacetylTo those outside of this industry, the recent media uproar that came as a direct offshoot of a study recently done by Harvard University’s School of Public Health, has everyone believing e-cigarettes are an imminent threat to those who use them because everyone is getting majorly exposed to diacetyl. And, as a result, the possibility of developing the horror that is known as popcorn lung is a disaster waiting to happen if you are using vapor products. Unfortunately, this sensationalized account of the reality of diacetyl exposure all comes down to the liquids one is using. And if a vaper is vaping with any IVG brands’ liquids, this chemical will not be a part of their juice, therefore this supposed risk of popcorn lung is reduced drastically.

Diacetyl is not contained in all e-liquids by any means. And for those who are regular users of vapor products, they already are aware of the dangers of diacetyl, and they steer clear of any products containing it. South Beach Smoke, EverSmoke, VaporFi, and Motley Brew are totally pleased to be 100% diacetyl free, always.

The study, which sampled a mere 51 flavors, attempted to paint a broad picture of the entire e-liquids industry based on those individual products. Considering the wide scale of brands, including high-quality brands who maintain very pure, diacetyl-free liquids, the stat of 75% of liquids containing diacetyl is exceptionally disproportionate.

Such an unfortunate account of misreporting and a failure on the part of Harvard University’s research team in this study is massively detrimental to an industry whose sole focus is to offer tobacco smokers alternatives that fit their lifestyles. By no means can we make claims on behalf of the whole industry, but there is no excuse for excluding the very many brands who are totally committed to steering clear of dangerous substances like diacetyl in their products.

We hope that anyone who uses e-liquids will read between the lines and see how biased this report is. In addition, it is also our sincerest hope that those who are a part of this industry continue to shoot down the lies because simply, they are wrong.
