Wells Fargo E-Cig Forum

International Vapor GroupLast week, Wells Fargo held their second annual E-Cig Forum, hosted by their senior tobacco analyst, Bonnie Herzog. The goal of the meeting was to gather the industry’s top minds to discuss the current environment as well as the future. While discussions went in every possible direction, the biggest area of concentration among all involved was centered on the innovation of products. International Vapor Group’s Nick Molina was in attendance at this meeting, and brought much insight to the discussions on the present state, and future of the market.

The conference had a greatly positive affect, enabling the industry as a whole to meet, discuss, exchange ideas and focus on the future. Because as much as there is competition in the market, there is still the common ground of innovating for the betterment of the products, which all who are truly passionate about the potential of these products is committed to.

The topic of innovation was very much a focus, as most people in this industry consider electronic cigarettes more along the lines of tech products as opposed to tobacco products. Our CEO made the excellent point that consumers are extremely pleased with using electronic cigarette products, especially for the endless options of flavors, and this is one sector of the market that is not being given enough attention. Tobacco and menthol flavors are obviously popular choices, especially for smokers who first start using e-cigarettes, however more and more users want greater variety. Vape shop owners were in total agreement that long term users’ purchases account for 60-90% of non tobacco and/or menthol e-liquid flavors. “Tank consumers want choice,” Molina said. “They haven’t had that in cigarettes.”

All members across the conference, regardless of which sector of the industry they belong to, agreed that the industry is still in its earliest stages, and there is still a long way to go, especially in the direction of developing products that truly appeal to the widest reach of smokers. The world’s smokers are seeking products that come even closer to the real thing, and they still have not been invented yet despite the immense growth and usage. It is the goal of all in the e-cigarette industry to create the product that will inherently appeal to all smokers in such a way that makes them want to switch. Every manufacturer present at the conference, however, shared optimism that these innovations will come with time.

The atmosphere of this unique concept is reminiscent of early 20th century European cafe culture, combining luxury, technology, and an inspiring ambiance where vapers can gather.

Just like in the United States, electronic cigarette sales have only skyrocketed as the devices have gained such profound popularity. Between 2012 and 2013, vapor cig sales in the UK rose an unprecedented 340 percent, bringing in 193 billion last year!

It’s safe to say, that the USA is clearly not the only e-cig market around, or the only that is thriving. E-cigarette usage is a worldwide phenomenon; they are changing the global landscape, one vapor cloud at a time.

 

The Word of the Year: Vape

That’s right, the industry has gained official recognition form the English lannguage, more than just by way of acknowledgement.

Oxford Dictionary editors noted that it is thirty times more common to encounter the term “vape” now, than it was  2 years ago, with usage having doubled alone in the past year. Vaping is clearly a hot lifestyle, and it has certainly achieved mainstream status.

We see this move as a significant marker of electronic cigarette smoking being completely recognized as a mainstream activity, and as beyond simply a trend in passing. As members of this emerging market, and having been a part of it since the beginning, we are immensely pleased that it has come this far.

Such an acknowledgement is also evident that no one expects electronic smoking to tail off. Rather the opposite is anticipated, as industry predictions set vaping to be the preferred method of smoking, outnumbering the number of tobacco smokers within the next 10 years.

The staff at Oxford Dictionaries wanted to choose a term that was very much current of the day. They were aiming for a word that is in constant usage, and has significant position in popular culture. Vape was picked among a handful of other slang terms, including “bae”, which is used to denote one’s significant other, and “bud tender” used to reference one who serves cannabis, however for 2014, vape is the term more evident of the times.

“Vape,” which has been derived of the term “vaping,” which originated as a slang term used to say “using an electronic cigarette/ vapor smoking device.” “Vape,” a verb, is the act of vaping. Slang it may be, but it’s officially here to stay!

Hitting the Big Time in the UK

In the UK, e-cigs are now being featured in television ads. While this may not seem like a big deal, as electronic cigarette advertisements have been on TV for a few years, actually showing devices in use was banned until a recent change in laws was enforced on Monday.

The UK’s Committee of Advertising Practice ruled in favor of electronic cigarette advertising as long as advertisements adhered to strict codes that tobacco not be shown “in a positive light.” This is a perfect compromise for the e-cigarette industry, as electronic cigarettes do not contain, support, or advertise tobacco in any manner.

Here are some of the explicit guidelines the Committee of Advertising Practice has requested:

  • They must not be “likely to appeal particularly to people under 18, especially by reflecting or being associated with youth culture.”
  • They must not encourage non-smokers to use e-cigarettes.They must make no claims that e-cigarettes are “safer” or “healthier” than smoking tobacco.
  • They must not make any health claims without approval from the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency.
